How to Identify Rice Stem Maggot Early for Effective Control

What is Rice Stem Maggot ?

Rice stem maggot, scientifically known as Orseolia oryzae, is one of the most destructive insect pests in rice cultivation. It mainly attacks rice plants from the seedling stage to the tillering stage, causing serious yield losses if not controlled in time.

This insect belongs to the family Cecidomyiidae and the order Diptera. The larvae are small, worm-like, and feed inside the rice stem.

Damage Caused by Rice Stem Maggot

After hatching, the larvae penetrate into the leaf sheath and growing point of the rice plant. Their feeding activity disrupts normal growth and causes deformation of the stem.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Plants grow slowly and become stunted

  • Tillers increase abnormally but are ineffective

  • The base of the stem becomes thick and hard

  • Leaves remain upright, dark green, and fail to unfold normally

  • The affected tiller forms an “onion-like” shape

  • Panicles do not form, leading to complete yield loss on infected tillers

If infestation is severe, the rice field may suffer serious yield reduction and uneven crop growth.

Life Cycle

Rice stem maggot develops through four stages:

  1. Egg

  2. Larva

  3. Pupa

  4. Adult fly

The life cycle is short, allowing many generations in a single rice season, especially under warm and humid conditions.

Favorable Conditions for Development

Rice stem maggot develops rapidly when:

  • Weather is warm and humid

  • Fields are continuously flooded

  • Rice is densely planted

  • Nitrogen fertilizer is overused

  • Crop rotation is not applied

These conditions create an ideal environment for population explosion.

Control and Management Methods

1. Cultural Practices

  • Use resistant rice varieties

  • Sow at proper planting density

  • Apply balanced fertilization

  • Drain water periodically to reduce larval survival

  • Remove and destroy infected tillers

2. Biological Control
  • Protect natural enemies such as spiders and parasitic wasps

  • Reduce unnecessary pesticide spraying

3. Chemical Control

Use registered insecticides at early infestation stages to prevent larval penetration into stems. Spraying should be done according to technical recommendations to ensure effectiveness and safety.

Conclusion

Rice stem maggot (muỗi hành) is a dangerous pest that directly affects rice yield. Early detection and integrated pest management are the key to effective control. By combining proper farming practices with timely chemical and biological measures, farmers can minimize damage and protect crop productivity.
